They became factory workers and lawyers and bricklayers and doctors, one President of the United States. Some developed alcoholism. A few developed schizophrenia. Some climbed the social ladder from the bottom all the way to the very top, and some made that journey in the opposite direction.

で「彼らは工員、弁護士、レンガ職人、医者などになりました。一人はアメリカ大統領になった者もいます。ある者はアルコール依存症になり、統合失調症を発症した人もいます。社会の底辺から頂点まで上り詰めたものもいれば、その正反対の人生を歩んだ者もいました。」という意味になります。

They became factory workers and lawyers and bricklayers and doctors, で「彼らは、工場労働者、弁護士、レンガ職人、医者になった。」です。
bricklayer は文字通り brick「レンガ」を、lay (-er)「置く、据える、横たえる（人）」ですね。

one President of the United States で「（彼らの中の）一人はアメリカ大統領（になった）」です。
one は one of them です。
省略を補うと、
one of them became President of the United States となります。
この調査対象者のなかで、アメリカ大統領になったのはジョン・F・ケネディ大統領です。

Some developed alcoholism. で「なかにはアルコール依存症になった者もいる」です。
some は同じく、some of them と同じです。
develop は「開発する、発展する」でおなじみの動詞ですが、ここでは「病気などを発症する」という意味になります。
例：develop Alzheimer’s「認知症を発症する」 、develop a bad habit「悪い癖がつく」
alcoholism で「アルコール依存症」です。
形容詞形は alcoholic「アルコール依存症の」、a alcoholic で「アル中（の人）」です。
例：He is a alcoholic.「彼はアル中だ。」

A few developed schizophrenia. で「数人は統合失調症を発症した」です。
a few は a few of them と同じ意味です。
schizophrenia スキツフ[リ]ーニアで「統合失調症」という意味の名詞です。
語源は schizo（分離した）＋phrenia（精神）

Some climbed the social ladder で「あるものは社会のはしごをよじ登った」です。
climb the social ladder は「立身出世する、低い身分から高い身分に出世する」という意味のイディオムです。
from the bottom all the way to the very top で「最底辺からはるばる頂点まで」です。
from ～ all the way to … で「～からはるばる…まで」という意味になります。
all the way は「はるばる、（～まで）ずっと」という意味の副詞句です。
例：escort someone all the way home「人を家まで送り届ける」
the very top は「頂点」です。
ここでの very は「まさに～、まさしく」です。
例：very paradise「まさに楽園そのもの」

and some made that journey in the opposite direction. で「また、あるものは、その旅をした、反対方向に」です。
make a journey で「旅をする、道を歩む」です。
that journey「その旅」とは、先に述べられた「底辺から頂点に上り詰めた」ことです。
in the opposite direction で「反対方向に」という意味の副詞句です。
opposite [ア]パズィトゥは「反対側の、向かい側の」という意味の形容詞です。
direction「方向」に関しては in ～ が使われます。
例：change in direction「方向を変える」、walk in this direction「この方向に歩く」

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
