A few years ago, I started studying grit in the Chicago public schools. I asked thousands of high school juniors to take grit questionnaires, and then waited around more than a year to see who would graduate.
で「数年前、私はシカゴ公立学区で『やり抜く力（グリット）』の研究を始めました。高校3年生の生徒たち数千人にグリットに関するアンケートに答えてもらい、その後1年以上待って、誰が卒業するのかを確認しました。」という意味になります。

A few years ago,「２～３年前」
I started studying grit で「私はグリットを研究し始めた」です。
start ～ing で「～し始める」という意味のコロケーション。
in the Chicago public schools. で「シカゴ公立学区」です。
the Chicago public schools は単体の学校でなく、シカゴの公立学校をまとめた学区ですね。

I asked thousands of high school juniors to take grit questionnaires, で「私は数千の高校三年生にアンケートに回答するように頼んだ」です。
ask ～ to do … で「～に…するように頼む」です。
junior は「（四年制の）高校三年生」に該当します。
9th grade: Freshman（フレッシュマン）＝高校1年生
10th grade: Sophomore（ソフォモア）＝高校2年生
11th grade: Junior（ジュニア）＝高校3年生
12th grade: Senior（シニア）＝高校4年生
(to) take grit questionnaires, で「グリットのアンケートを受ける（ように頼んだ）」です。
, and then ～「そしてその後～」
waited around more than a year で「1年以上待った」です。
wait around で「何もしないで待つ、時間をつぶす」という意味合いコロケーション。
to see who would graduate. で「誰が卒業するかを確認するために」です。
ここでの see ～ は「～を確認する」という意味合いです。
例：see how it tastes「どんな味か確認する、味見する」

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
