This is how the year would go. So I’d start off light, and I’d bump it up in the middle months, and then at the end, I would kick it up into high gear just like a little staircase. How hard could it be to walk up the stairs? No big deal, right?

で「これが、その一年がどうなるかを示したものです。まあ最初は軽めに、そして中盤で少し負荷を上げて、最後の方は、階段を登るみたいに一段一段ギアを上げていく。階段を上がるくらいなら、大したことないでしょう？」という意味になります。

ビデオを見ると、スライドに図が示されています。
一年がかりの卒論の計画のことですね。
So ～「つまり、なので～」
I’d start off light,「私はまずは軽めに始めるでしょう」です。
start off で「着手する、出発する」
light はここでは形容詞の副詞的用法で「軽めに、手加減して」
I’d は I would の省略。この would は仮定の話を説明する時に使われるものです。
つまり「もしこの計画を進めるなら～するでしょう」という意味合いです。
, and ～「そして～」
I’d bump it up「わたしは負荷を上げます」
it は「そのペース、その負荷」です。
in the middle months,「一年の中盤の月々に」です。
bump up ～ で「～を上げる、増やす」
and then ～「その後～」
at the end,「最後には」
I would kick it up into high gear で「ハイギアに入れる（本気を出す）でしょう」
just like ～「ちょうど～のように」
a little staircase.「ちょっとした階段（のように）」
staircase は「階段室、（手すりなどを含む）階段一式、階段とその周囲の空間」を意味します。
対して a stair で「一段の階段（踏み板部分）」です。
a little はここでは物体的な小ささを意味するものではなく、「ちょっとした」という意味合い。

How hard could it be to walk up the stairs? で「そんな風に階段を上って行くのはどれくらい大変でしょうか？」
主語の it は to walk up ～「上がっていくこと」を指している仮主語になっています。
これは反語的表現で「どれほど大変か？」→「いやそれほど大変ではない」というニュアンスです。
the stairs は「（段の連なりとしての）階段」という意味です。
日常的に「階段を上がる／降りる」と言うときはこちらを使うことが多いです。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。

つまり

まずは軽くスタートを切ります
