Australia appeared to be heading towards a conservative coalition. But there has been a remarkable political reversal, giving the social-democrat government, run by the Labor Party, a boost ahead of the vote on Saturday.
で「オーストラリアは保守連合に向かうように思われていたが、ある目覚ましい政治的な逆転が起こり、土曜日の投票を前に、労働党が率いる社会民主主義政権に追い風となっている。」という意味になります。

Australia appeared to be ～ で「オーストラリアは～であるように思われた」です。
appear で「～のように見える、～だと思われる」という意味の動詞。
(to) be heading towards a conservative coalition. で「保守連合に向かっていくと（思われていた）」です。
ここでの head は動詞で「（～に）進む」という意味です。頭を前にして進んでいくイメージ。
conservative coalition で「保守連合」です。
いくつかの保守的な政党が連携して作る政権という意味ですね。
conservative コン[サ]バティヴで「保守的な、コンサバな」という意味の形容詞。
対義語は liberal [リ]ベラォ「リベラルな」、改革的な」です。
coalition コア[リ]ションで「連合、連立」です。

But「しかし～」
there has been a remarkable political reversal, で「ある目覚ましい政治的な逆転があった」です。
remarkable は「顕著な、目立った」という意味の形容詞。
reversal は「反転、逆転」
, giving ～ で「（それは）～に…を与えて」と分詞構文で繋げています。
(giving) the social-democrat government, で「社会民主主義政権に（～を与えて）」
, run by the Labor Party, は直前の social-democrat government を補足的に説明して「労働党によって運営されている（社会民主主義政権）」です。
the Labor Party はイニシャライズされて固有名詞となっているので、これは一般的な「労働党」ではなくて「オーストラリア労働党」のことですね。
オーストラリアにおいては、the Australian Labor Party（ALP） の略称として the Labor Party と表記されるのが一般的です。
イギリスの労働党は the Labour Party（u が入る英式スペル）で、同じ「労働党」でも国によってスペルが違います。
何を与えたのかというと、
(giving the social-democrat government) a boost で「（社会民主主義政権に）勢いを（与えて）」です。
ahead of the vote on Saturday. で「土曜日の投票に先立って」です。
