Looking back, I had the realization that at one point in the not-so-distant past, philosophy wasn’t the sort of thing that was discussed only at formal conferences and in arcane journals. It was exchanged over dinner, between families. It was the stuff of everyday life. The love of wisdom was not bound in academic journals that no one read; it rather permeated all aspects of human existence.

Looking back, で「（過去を）振り返ってみると、思い返すと」という意味の言い回しです。
I had the realization that ～ で「私は～という気付きを得た」です。
have a realization で「気付く、気付きを得る」
どんな気付きかというと、(that) ～
at one point in the not-so-distant past, 「ある時点で、そう遠くない過去の」
philosophy wasn’t the sort of thing で「哲学はその類のものではなかった」です。
どんな類のものではなかったのかというと、関係代名詞 that で繋いで、
that was discussed 「議論される（類のものではなかった）」
only at formal conferences and in arcane journals. で「公式な学会や難解な専門誌の中だけで」です。
formal conferences で「公式な協議会」です。この文脈では「学会（academic conference）」となります。
in arcane journals. で「難解な専門誌の中（だけで）」です。
arcane アーケインは「素人には難しくてわからない、難解な」という意味の形容詞。
例：arcane language「小難しい言葉、専門用語」

It was exchanged over dinner, で「それ（哲学）は夕食をとりながら交わされていた」です。
over dinner は「夕食を食べながら」という意味のコロケーション。
例：have a meeting over lunch「昼食を食べながらミーティングをする」
, between families.「複数の家族同士の間で」です。
一つの家族の中の会話ではなく、複数の家族同士の間、つまり隣人や親戚の集まりで食卓を囲んでいる状況ですね。

It was the stuff of everyday life. でそれ（哲学）は日常生活の中のものだった。」です。
stuff は thing と入れ替え可能で「もの、こと」です。
thing とは違って、複数単数の区別がない（不可算名詞）ので注意しましょう。

The love of wisdom was not bound in ～ で「知識への愛は～の中に縛られていなかった」です。
the love of wisdom で「知への愛」です。この of は【対象】の of で「～への、～に対する」と訳せます。
例：a fear of spiders「クモに対する恐怖心」
bound は bind「縛る、結びつける」の受動態です。
(in) academic journals that no one read; で「誰も読まない学術誌（の中に縛れて）」
セミコロン（;）で「そうではなくて～（, but rather ～）」
it rather permeated all aspects of human existence.「それはむしろ人間存在のあらゆる側面に浸透していた。」です。
permeate ～ で「～に浸透する、～に充満する」です。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
