Not just bad, but the worst book ever written. And I started to think I should just dump this project. But then I remembered Tom talking to the open air and I tried it. So I just lifted my face up from the manuscript and I directed my comments to an empty corner of the room.

Not just bad, but the worst book ever written. And I started to think I should just dump this project. But then I remembered Tom talking to the open air and I tried it. So I just lifted my face up from the manuscript and I directed my comments to an empty corner of the room.
で「ただ悪いだけじゃなくて、今までで最悪の本です。それで私はこのプロジェクトはもう中止したほうがいいじゃないかと思い始めました。でもその時、何もない空間に話しかけたトムのことを思い出しました。だから私もそれを試してみることにしました。だから、私は手書きの原稿から顔を上げて、空っぽの部屋の角に向けて話しかけました。」という意味になります。

Not just bad, but the worst book ever written. で「ただ悪いだけじゃなくて、今までで最悪の本です」です。
not ～, but …「～ではなく…だ」の形です。

And I started to think ～ で「それで私は～だと考え始めた」です。
(that) I should just dump this project. で「私はさっさとこのプロジェクトをやめてしまうべき（だと）」です。
should just ～ は「とにかく～すべき、すぐに～すべき」という意味で、should dumpを強めた言い回しです。
例：Maybe I should just move out.「きっと私は出て行った方がいいみたいね。」
dump this project で「このプロジェクトを投げ捨てる」です。
dump は「ごみなどをドサッと投げ捨てる」という意味から「恋人などを振る、捨てる」という意味です。
例：illegal dumping「不法投棄」、He dumped her for a young girl.「彼は彼女を捨てて若い女に走った。」
ここでは this project「この（執筆の）プロジェクト」を「中断する、諦める」ということですね。

But then「でもその時」
I remembered Tom talking to the open air で「私は思い出した、トムが何もない空間に話しかけたこと」です。
ちょっと前に出てきた以下の場面のことです。
He just looked up at the sky, and he said,「彼はただ空を見上げてこう言った～」
open air は「戸外、野外」という意味もありますが、ここでは the open air で「その（例の）何もない空間」という意味です。
and I tried it. で「で、私もそれを試してみた」です。

So I just lifted my face up from the manuscript で「それで、私は顔を上げて、手書きの原稿から」です。
lift ～ up で「～を上げる」です。
manuscript は「（手書きの）原稿」です。
manu- は「手」という意味の接頭語です。
例：manual「手作業の」、manufacture「（手で）製造する、製作する」

and I directed my comments to an empty corner of the room. で「そして、部屋の何もない角に話しかけた」です。
direct my comments to ～ で直訳すると「～にコメントを向かわせる」ですので「～に語り掛ける、～に向かって発言する」です。
to an empty corner of the room. で「何もない部屋の角に」です。
empty はさきほどの open air の open と同じ意味ですね。
「空っぽの、何もない」は他にも void などとも言えます。
例：void space「空間」

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。

ただ悪いだけじゃなく

but the worst book ever written.
今までで最悪の本です

And I started to think
それで私は～だと考え始めました

I should just dump this project.
このプロジェクトはもうあきらめてしまうべきだと

But then I remembered
しかしその時思いだしました

Tom talking to the open air
トムが何もない空間に話しかけるのを

and I tried it.
それで私も試してみました

So I just lifted my face up
それでただ私は顔を上げて

from the manuscript
手書きの原稿から

and I directed my comments to
～へ向けて話しかけた

an empty corner of the room.
何もない部屋の隅に

今度は「頭の中で」一行ずつ日本語に訳しながら…
