本日の例文

Mark Zuckerberg のハーバード大学の卒業式でのスピーチ（2017年）です。

The thing is, it never even occurred to me that someone might be us. We were just college kids. We didn’t know anything about that. There were all these big technology companies with resources. I just assumed one of them would do it. But this idea was so clear to us — that all people want to connect. So we just kept moving forward, day by day.

I just assumed one of them would do it. But this idea was so clear to us — that all people want to connect. So we just kept moving forward, day by day.
で「でも実は、その誰かが自分たちかもしれないなんて考えたこともありませんでした。私たちはただの大学生だったし、そんなことについて何も知りませんでした。大きなテクノロジー企業がたくさんあって、資金もリソースも持っていたから、きっとどこかの会社がやるだろうと、当然のように思っていました。でも、すべての人はつながりを求めている、という、このアイデアは、私たちにはあまりにも明確でした。だから私たちはただ、毎日一歩ずつ、前に進み続けました。」という意味になります。

The thing is, で「でも問題なのは～」です。
問題提起をする時の表現です。
it never even occurred to me that ～ で「～ということは私には思いも浮かばなかった」です。
occur to ～ で「～の心に浮かぶ、思いつく」という意味の句動詞です。
例：A question just occurred to me「ちょうど質問を思いつきました。」
主語の it は that 以降「～ということ」を受けています。
(that) someone might be us. で「その誰かが私たちになるかもしれない（ということ）」です。

We were just college kids.「私たちはただの大学生にすぎなかった。」です。

We didn’t know anything about that.「私たちはそれについて何も知らなかった。」です。
that「それ」とは、全世界を繋げる（connect the whole world）ことを指しています。

There were all these big technology companies with resources. で「リソースがある大きなテック企業がたくさんあった」です。
ここでの these の使い方は、聞き手とイメージを共有するためのもので「こんなにも、ほら、ああいう〜」と感じです。

I just assumed (that) ～ で「私はただ当然～だと思っていた」です。
(that) one of them would do it.「そのような企業の内のひとつがそれをやるだろう（と）」

But「でも～」
this idea was so clear to us で「この考えは私たちにあまりにも明確にあった」
that ～ は同格の that で、this idea を説明して「～という考え」です。
(that) all people want to connect. で「すべての人々がつながりたがっている（という考え）」です。

So「だから」
we just kept moving forward,「私たちはただ進み続けた」
day by day.「一日一日」

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
