で「なぜ物事がこのような形になったのかを理解し、誰がそうなるように仕向けたのか、そして誰がそのままの状態を維持したがっているのかを見極めましょう。同じような状況に置かれた人々が、どんな戦略を使ったのかを学ぶことです。正面からの攻撃か、遠回しの手段か。連携かカリスマ的権威なのか。」という意味になります。

Understand why ～「なぜ～するのかを理解しましょう」
why it turned out this way,「なぜそれがこんな風になったのか（を）」です。
this way は「こんな風に、このように」という意味の言い回し。
また、
(Understand) who’s made it so, で「誰がそのようにしたのか（を理解しましょう）」
make ～ … で「～を…にする」です。
so は「そのように」
, and ～「また、」
who wants to keep it so. で「誰がそれをそのままにしておきたいのか（を）」
it は「（今の）状況、現状」を指しています。

Study the strategies で「その戦略を研究しましょう」
(that) others in such situations used で「そのような状況において他の人々が使った（戦略）」
others は「あなた以外の人々」です。

コロン（:）で「つまり～、というのは」
frontal attack or indirection, で「正面攻撃なのか、遠回しのやり方か」です。
coalitions or charismatic authority. で「連合なのか、カリスマ的な権威性なのか」です。
indirection で「遠回りな、回りくどいやり方」です。
形容詞形は、indirect インディレクトゥで「まっすぐでない、ひねくれた、間接的な」
in-（否定）＋ direct「直接的な、まっすぐな」
coalition は「連合、連立」です。
例：ruling coalition parties「連立与党」、coalition forces「連合軍」
charismatic authority は「カリスマ的な権威性」です。
カリスマ性を持った一人の人物が使う独裁的なやり方ですね。
