本日の例文

TED-Edより「先延ばし魔の頭の中はどうなっているか」です。

Now, sometimes it makes sense to be doing things that are easy and fun, like when you’re having dinner or going to bed or enjoying well-earned leisure time. That’s why there’s an overlap. Sometimes they agree. But other times, it makes much more sense to be doing things that are harder and less pleasant, for the sake of the big picture.

Now, sometimes it makes sense to be doing things that are easy and fun, like when you’re having dinner or going to bed or enjoying well-earned leisure time. That’s why there’s an overlap. Sometimes they agree. But other times, it makes much more sense to be doing things that are harder and less pleasant, for the sake of the big picture.
で「さて、夕食をとっているときや寝る前、あるいは十分に働いたあとの余暇を楽しんでいるときのように、楽で心地よいことをしているのが理にかなう場合もあります。だからこそ、そこには重なり合う部分があるのです。ときには、両者は一致します。しかし一方で、全体像（大局）を考えれば、もっと大変で、あまり楽しくはないことをあえてやるほうが、ずっと理にかなっている場合もあります。」という意味になります。

Now,「さて」
sometimes「時には」
it makes sense to ～「～することは理にかなっている」
to be doing things (that) ～「（～な）ことをしていることが」です。
(things) that are easy and fun,「簡単で楽しい（ことを）」
, like ～「～のような、～などの」
when you’re having dinner「夕食を食べているとき（や）」
or going to bed「寝ようとしている（ときや）」
or enjoying well-earned leisure time.「ご褒美の余暇を楽しんでいる（ときなど）」です。
well-earned は「頑張って働いて得た、取って当然の」という意味の形容詞です。
例：well-earned rest「（懸命に働いた者が）取って当然の休息」、well-earned success「当然の報いとしての成功」

That’s why ～「そういうわけで～だ」
there’s an overlap.「オーバーラップがある（のだ）」です。
overlap は「重複、重なり合う部分、一致する部分」という意味です。

Sometimes they agree. で「時には、彼らの意見は一致する。」です。
they は「合理的な意思決定者」と「サル」を指しています。

But other times,「でも他の場合は」
other times は先程の sometime に対応しています。
it makes much more sense to ～ で「～することがずっと理にかなっている」です。
make sense に much more がくっついた形。
to be doing things (that) ～「（～な）ことをしていることが」です。
(things) that are harder and less pleasant, 「より大変で、あまり楽しくない（ことを）」
, for the sake of the big picture.「その大局のために」
for the sake of ～ で「～のために」という意味のコロケーション。
big picture は「全体像、大局、全体の動き」です。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。

～なことをしているほうが

that are easy and fun,
簡単で楽しい（こと）

like
例えば～など
