で「私たちは、人類の歴史という大きな流れが、人々がより大きな単位で結集していく方向へと曲がっていることを理解しています。――部族から都市へ、都市から国家へ――そしてその目的は、一人では成し遂げられなかったことを達成するためなのです。」という意味になります。

We understand (that) ～ で「私たちは～だということを理解している」
the great arc of human history で「人類の歴史という大きな弧」です。
great arc で「大きな円弧」です。
arc アークは「弧」です。幾何学では「円周上の2点を結ぶ曲線部分（弧）」を指します。
ここでは人類の歴史の壮大な流れ（曲線）を意味しています。
bends towards ～ で「～の方向へと曲がっている」です。
bend は「曲がる、傾く、カーブする、たわむ」です。
(towards) people coming together で「結集する人々（の方へと）」
come together で「集まる、結集する」
in ever greater numbers で「さらに大きな人数に（結集する）」です。
in ～ numbers で「～な数で、～な数に」という意味のコロケーション。
例：produced in large numbers「大量に作られる」
この The arc of ～ bends towards … という表現は、キング牧師の有名な演説の一説からのオマージュです。
The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.「道徳的宇宙の弧は長いが、それは正義に向かって曲がっている。」

to cities to nations「都市へと、そして国家へと」
— to achieve things (that) ～「～なことを達成するために」
(that) we couldn’t on our own.「私たちが一人ではできない（ようなことを）」です。
we couldn’t (achieve) と省略されています。
on one’s own は「独力で、一人で、単独で」という意味の言い回し。
by oneself に似ていますが、こちらは「（物理的に）一人で」という意味。
一方、on one’s own は「精神的・能力的に自立して」というニュアンスになります。
例：He lives by himself.「彼は一人暮らしだ。」
例：She finished the project on her own.「彼女は誰にも頼らずにプロジェクトを終わらせた。」
それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
