And for me, the best contemporary example that I have of how to do that is the musician Tom Waits, who I got to interview several years ago on a magazine assignment.
で「そして私にとって、それをどう実現するかの一番良い同年代のお手本としては、ミュージシャンのトム・ウェイツです。彼とは数年前に雑誌の仕事で取材する機会を得ました。」という意味になります。

the best contemporary example that I have で「最も良い同世代の手本、私が持っている」です。
contemporary で「同時代の、同時期の、現代の」という意味の形容詞です。
前述の詩人ルース・ストーンさんは年齢層が高く contemporary とは言えない人なので、今度は同世代の人の例を出すという事ですね。
example (that) I have で「私が持っている実例（手本）」です。
何の手本かというと、
(example) of how to do that で「それをどうやってやるかの（手本）」 です。
that「それ」とは、前述の、
keep us sane「正気でいながら」relate to it「それと折り合いをつける」ことを指しています。
つまり、詩人ルース・ストーンが経験したような超常現象のような創作プロセスに、気が狂わずにどう対処するか？です。

その手本は、
is the musician Tom Waits で「～はミュージシャンのトム・ウェイツです」です。

who I got to interview で「（その彼に）私はインタビューする機会を得た」です。
who は whom とも言い換えられますが、
このように口語表現では目的格でも whom ではなく whoを使うことが多いです。

got to ～ は「～しなければならない」という意味もありますが、
ここでは単純に get to ～「～する機会を得る」の過去形です。
例：get to meet a celebrity「ある有名人と会う機会を得る」

several years ago 「数年前に」

on a magazine assignment. で「雑誌の仕事で」です。
assignment は「（仕事のなどの）割り当て、業務、任務、宿題」です。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
