ニュース記事では passed away などの婉曲表現よりも直接的な died がよく使われます。
led the Roman Catholic church で「ローマ・カトリック教会を率いた」です。
led は lead「～を率いる」の過去形。
the Roman Catholic church で「ローマカトリック教会」です。

hemisphere で「（地球の）半球」です。

つまり1300年ぶりの非ヨーロッパ出身の教皇ということです。

彼はシリア出身で、在位期間は731年〜741年でした。

election は「（選挙などでの）当選、選出、選ばれること」です。
reflect ～ は「～を反射する」という意味から「～を反映する、～を表す」という意味になります。
例：reflect a cultural difference「文化の違いを反映する」
何を反映していたかというと、
a broader geographical shift in the church. で「より広範囲な地理的な変化、その教会における」です。
geographical shift で「地理的な変化」です。
in the church の the church は先ほど出てきた the Roman Catholic church を指しています。
これはつまり、20世紀初頭、カトリック信者の多くはヨーロッパに集中していましたが、現在では、信者の多数はラテンアメリカ、アフリカ、アジアに存在しているということを指しています。
