彼女に別れ話を切り出したところ、信じられない衝撃の事実が！
Today, when I tried to break up with my girlfriend of 2 years, she had no idea we were even dating. She thought of all the movies, dinners and “sleep overs” I had with her was because we were such great friends. FML
で「今日、2年付き合った彼女と別れようとしたとき、彼女は僕たちが付き合っているとさえ思ってなかった。彼女は、僕らが行った映画やディナーやお泊りもすべて、僕らが大親友だからなんだと思っていた。 F*ck my life!」という意味になります。
今日の例文は、恋愛関係についての用語がたくさん登場します。
when I tried to break up with my girlfriend of 2 years, で「2年付き合った彼女と別れようとしたとき」です。
break up with ～ で「～と別れる」という意味の言い回しです。
例：She just broke up with her boyfriend.「彼女は彼氏と別れたばかりです。」
girlfriend は、「彼女、付き合っている女の子」という意味になります。
日本のガールフレンド（女友達）とちょっと意味合いが違います。
girlfriend of 2years で「二年付き合った彼女」という意味になります。
of _years で「～年来の」という意味になります。
例：settle down with her boyfriend of 10 years「10年付き合った彼氏と結婚する」
she had no idea we were even dating. で「彼女は私たちがつき合っているとさえ思っていなかった。」です。
have no idea は「～を知らない」という意味でおなじみですが、「～のつもりなどない」という意味でも使われます。
be dating で「付き合っている」という意味になります。
date は「デートする」という意味ですが、「付き合う」という意味もあります。
例：I’m dating him.「私は彼と付き合っています。」、begin a dating relationship「お付き合いを始める」
She thought of ～ で「～だと思っていた」です。
どう思っていたかというと、
all the movies, dinners and “sleep overs” I had with her「彼女と一緒に行った映画やディナーや“お泊り”すべてが」
was because we were such great friends 「僕たちがとても大の仲良しだからなのだと」
です。
I had with her「ぼくが彼女と一緒にした」は直前の all the movies, dinners and “sleep overs” を修飾している関係代名詞節です。
be動詞後に because節が来る言い回しもよく使われる表現です。
「～は…だからだ」という意味ですね。
sleep over は「外泊する、お泊りする」という意味の句動詞で、それが名詞化されて sleepover で「お泊り」という意味になります。
それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
