で「妻は上の階に犬を入れるのを嫌がるので、うちは階段にゲートを付けている。彼女が仕事で出かけている間に、猫が踊り場で吐いてしまった。掃除するのが面倒だったのでゲートを開けっぱなしにしておいたら、犬は大喜び、そして汚れもなくなった。結果オーライ。」という意味になります。

(My) wife doesn’t like the dogs upstairs, で「（私の）妻はうちの犬たちが2階に行くのが好きじゃない。」です。
like + 人 + 状態（補足情報）で「～が…の状態でいるのが好き」という意味が作れます。
例：I like you in a suit.「スーツを来ているあなたが好き。」
upstairs は「上階に、上階で」という意味で、 home, outside などと同じく副詞です。
例：go upstairs「上の階に行く」
, so ～「だから～」
we have a stair gate. で「うちには階段用のゲートがある。」です。
stair で「（一段の）階段」です。
ペットを通さないようにするバリケードのようなものですね。

She was out at work,「彼女は仕事で出かけていた」です。
out at work で「仕事で外出中」です。
, and the cat vomited on the landing.「猫が踊り場で吐いてしまった。」です。
the cat で「うちの猫」です。
landing は「階段の踊り場」です。

(I) couldn’t be bothered cleaning it, で「それを掃除する気になれなかった」です。
can’t be bothered ～ing で「（面倒で）～する気にならない」という意味の言い回し。
イギリスでよく使われる表現です。
アメリカ英語では、I don’t feel like ～ing の方が一般的。
, left the gate open, で「ゲートを開けっ放しにした」
, we have a happy dog and no mess.「私たちにはハッピーな犬がいて、汚れもなくなった」です。
mess は「混乱、乱雑、汚物」です。

それはまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
