In the time since Michael Jackson’s sudden death in 2009, the financial story that has played out has been nothing short of a thriller.

In the time since ~ で「~以降、~からの間」という意味です。
in the time to ~ なら「~までの間」
in the time between the two World Wars

the financial story that has played out までが主語(主部)です。
例:the game is played out「そのゲームはやり尽くした」

例:thrill audiences around the world「世界中の聴衆を感動させる」

the financial story

that has played out

has been nothing short of a thriller.

In the time since Michael Jackson’s sudden death

in 2009,

the financial story

that has played out

has been nothing short of a thriller.

In the time since Michael Jackson’s sudden death
in 2009,
the financial story

has been nothing short of a thriller.
