But through a combination of luck and the persistence of several generations of researchers, this study has survived. About 60 of our original 724 men are still alive, still participating in the study, most of them in their 90s.

luck and ~「幸運と」
the persistence of several generations of researchers「数世代の研究者たちの粘り強さ」です。
例:persisting headache「しつこい頭痛」、persist with one’s work「自分の仕事をあくまでやり通す」

this study has survived.

About 60 of our original 724 men are still alive,

still participating in the study,
take part in ~ とも言えます。

most of them (being) in their 90s.
When I was in my 20s「私が20代の頃」

the persistence of several generations of researchers,
this study has survived.
About 60 of our original 724 men
