で「野生では、猫たちは木登りや狩りや自己防衛のために鋭い爪が必要でした。身近な平らな部分で爪を研ぐことは猫たちを準備万端にしてくれて、背中や足の筋肉のストレッチにもなり、ストレス解消にもなったのです。」という意味になります。

In the wild,「野生では」
cats needed sharp claws で「猫たちは鋭い爪を必要としていた」
for ～「～のために」
climbing, hunting, and self-defense. で「登ったり、狩りをしたり、自己防衛（のために）」

Sharpening their claws on nearby surfaces までが主語で「自分たちの爪を研ぐこと、近くにある表面で」です。
sharpen [シャ]ープンで「～を鋭くする、～を研ぐ」です。
nearby は「手近な、すぐ近くの」
surface は「表面」です。木や壁などの表面ということですね。
kept them conditioned and ready, で「猫たちをちゃんと装備されて準備のできた状態にさせた」です。
kept は keep の過去形。
keep ～ … で「～を…な状態に保つ」です。
例：Keep me updated.「また何かあったら教えてくださいね。」
conditioned と ready はほぼ同じ意味ですね。
helped stretch their back and leg muscles, で「猫たちの背中や四肢の筋肉のストレッチに役立った」です。
help do ～ と動詞の原形が続いて「～することに役立つ」という意味の言い回しです。
例：It helps remove the waste matter.「それは老廃物を除去するのに役立つ。」
, and ～「また～」
relieve some stress, too. で「ストレスも緩和させる」です。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
