Calling for a suspended sentence, Hoshino’s defense team had argued during the trial that his actions did not constitute a crime because some of the manga files uploaded on Manga-Mura were already viewable on other websites.
で「執行猶予を求めて、裁判の中で星野氏の弁護団は、漫画村にアップロードされた漫画ファイルの中にはすでに他のウェブサイト上で見られる状態になっていたものもあったのだから、彼の行動は罪にはならないと主張していた。」という意味になります。

Calling for a suspended sentence, で「執行猶予を求めて」という意味になります。
～ing の分詞構文となっています。
call for ～ は「～を求めて声をあげる、～を要求する」という意味の句動詞です。
例：call for a cease-fire「停戦を要請する」
suspended sentence で「執行猶予（付きの判決）」です。
parole パ[ロ]ウォ, probation という言い方もあります。
sentence は「判決、判決文」です。
ruling とも言います。
例：hand down a ruling「判決を言い渡す」、hand down a suspended sentence「執行猶予付きの判決を言い渡す」

Hoshino’s defense team で「星野氏の弁護団」です。
defense team で「弁護団」となります。
defense は「防御、防衛」という意味から「弁護、被告側」という意味になります。
例：Who will defend, who will prosecute?「どちらが被告で、どちらが原告？」

had argued that ～ で「～だと主張していた」です。
すでに執行猶予無しの判決が出ており、それよりも前に「～していた」なので、過去完了形になっています。

argued と that の間には挿入された形で、
during the trial で「公判中に」という意味の副詞句です。

何と主張していたかというと、
(that) his actions did not constitute a crime で「彼の行動は罪にはならない（と）」です。
his は「星野氏の」です。
constitute a crime で「罪になる」 という意味のコロケーションです。
constitute は「～を構成する、～に相当する、～をもたらす、～となる」という意味の動詞です。
名詞形 constitution は「憲法、規約、構造」という意味になります。

because「なぜなら～」

some of the manga files uploaded on Manga-Mura が主語となり「漫画村にアップロードされた漫画ファイルのいくつかは」です。

were already viewable on other websites. で「～は、すでに閲覧できる状態だった、他のウェブサイトで」です。
