本日の例文

Mark Zuckerberg のハーバード大学の卒業式でのスピーチ（2017年）です。

Now, you may be thinking: can I really do this? Remember when I told you about that class I taught at the Boys and Girls Club? One day after class I was talking to them about college, and one of my top students raised his hand and said he wasn’t sure he could go because he’s undocumented. He didn’t know if they’d let him in.

Now, you may be thinking: can I really do this? Remember when I told you about that class I taught at the Boys and Girls Club? One day after class I was talking to them about college, and one of my top students raised his hand and said he wasn’t sure he could go because he’s undocumented. He didn’t know if they’d let him in.
で「さて、今あなたはこう思っているかもしれません。『本当に自分にもそんなことができるのだろうか？』と。私がボーイズ・アンド・ガールズ・クラブで教えていた授業の話をしたのを覚えていますか。ある日、授業のあとで私はその子たちと大学のことを話していました。すると、成績優秀な生徒のひとりが手を挙げて、自分は不法滞在の身分だから大学へ行けるかどうか分からない、と言ったのです。大学側が自分を受け入れてくれるかどうか、彼には分からなかったのです。」という意味になります。

Now, you may be thinking: 「さて、皆さんこう思っているかもしれませんね。」
can I really do this?「私がこれを本当にできるだろうか？」

Remember when I told you about ～ で「私が～について皆さんにお話しした時のことを思い出してください」
(about) that class「あのクラス（について）」
(that) I taught「私が教えた（あのクラス）」
at the Boys and Girls Club?「ボーイズ・アンド・ガールズ・クラブで」

One day 「ある日」
after class「授業の後で」
I was talking to them about college,「私は彼らに大学について話していました」
and ～「すると」
one of my top students「私の優秀な生徒のひとりが」
raised his hand「手をあげました」
and said ～「そして～と言いました」
he wasn’t sure ～「自分は～か確信がない（と）」
he could go 「自分が（大学に）行けるか」
because he’s undocumented. で「なぜなら自分が不法滞在者だから」です。
undocumented は「正式な書類がない」という意味から「密入国の、不法滞在の」という意味になります。
例：undocumented worker「不法就労者」、undocumented immigrants「不法移民」

He didn’t know if they’d let him in.「彼は、大学が自分を入学させてくれるかどうか分からなかった。」
they はここでは大学側の人々を指しています。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。

さて皆さんこう思っているかもしれませんね

自分にも本当にできるだろうか？と

Remember
～を思い出してみてください

when I told you
私が皆さんに話したときのことを

about that class I taught
私が教えていたあのクラスについて

授業の後

I was talking to them about college,
大学について彼らに話していました

and one of my top students
すると優秀な生徒の一人が

raised his hand
手を挙げました

and said
そしてこう言いました

he wasn’t sure
自分には確信がないと

he could go
（大学に）行けるかどうか

because he’s undocumented.
自分が不法入国者だから

He didn’t know if
彼には分らなかったのです

they’d let him in.
大学が自分を入学させてくれるかどうか

今度は「頭の中で」一行ずつ日本語に訳しながら…
