で「父は家やオフィスの片づけ・不用品処分の仕事をしていた。あるとき、父が化学実験器具を大量に手に入れてきて、私たちは庭の小屋に蒸留器を作った。それで毎年、ワインやビール、シードルから蒸留酒を作っていた。少し法律を破るようなことをしていなかったら、今の私は研究化学者にはなっていなかっただろうと、私は確信している。」という意味になります。
My father did house and office clearances. で「父は家やオフィスの不用品処分の仕事をしていた。」です。
clearance で「撤去、片付け、不用品処分、在庫一掃」です。
日本でもクリアランス・セール（在庫一掃セール）などと言いますね。
He got a whole bunch of chemistry kit「父は、化学実験用器具一式を大量に手に入れた」です。
a whole bunch of ～ で「どっさりの～、たくさんの～」という意味の言い回し。
chemistry kit は「化学実験用キット、化学実験器具」です。
and ～「そして～」
we built a still in our shed.「私たちは物置小屋に蒸留器を作った」です。
build で「～を建てる、組み立てる、作り上げる」
still はここでは名詞で「蒸留器」です。
語源は、ラテン語 stillare（滴る）です。
shed は「（庭などにある）物置小屋、納屋」です。
同じような意味で、garage、barn などがありますが、
違いは以下の通り、
shed：庭などにある物置小屋
garage：車を置くガレージ、車庫（物置にも使うことはある）
barn：農場などの納屋
We distilled spirits from ～ で「私たちは～から蒸留酒を蒸留した」です。
distill ディスティォで「～を蒸留する」です。焼酎やウイスキーなどの蒸留酒をつくることですね。
dis-（下に）＋ stillare（滴る）
例：distilled liquor「蒸留酒」、distillery「蒸留所」
対してビールや日本酒などの醸造酒を作ることは、brew ～「～を醸造する」です。
spirits は「酒精、蒸留酒、エタノール」です。
ウイスキー、ブランデー、ウォッカ、ジンなどの強い酒を指します。
from wine, beer, and cider「ワインやビールやシードル（から）」
every year.「毎年」
cider [サ]イダーは「リンゴ酒、シードル」です。日本語の「サイダー（炭酸飲料）」の意味はありません。
I am confident that ～「私は～だと確信している」
if we hadn’t broken the law a little bit「もし私たちが法律をほんのちょっと犯してなかったら」です。
break the law で「法律を破る、法律を犯す」です。
I’d not be research chemist now.「私は今頃、研究化学者になっていなかっただろう。」です。
I’d not ～ は I would not ～ の略。
つまり私は今、研究科学者として仕事をしている、ということですね。
※ be a research chemist と冠詞 a が抜けています。
それはまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。

家やオフィスの不用品処分の仕事を
He got a whole bunch of chemistry kit
父は化学実験器具を大量に手に入れた

そして私たちは蒸留器を組み立てた
