Today, for the first time in years, I worked up the nerve to ask a work friend if they wanted to hang out sometime. They winced, and said they were busy that day. I hadn’t specified a day. FML
で「今日、何年かぶりに、会社の同僚にいつか遊びに行かないかと勇気を振り絞って誘ってみた。彼らはたじろいで、その日は忙しいと言った。まだ何日かは言ってなかったのに。F*ck my life!」という意味になります。

for the first time in years で「ここ何年かぶりに、久しぶりに」という意味の決まり文句ですね。
in years で「長年、何年も」という意味になります。

I worked up the nerve to ask ～ で「勇気を振り絞って聞いてみた」となります。
work up the nerve で「勇気を振り絞る、思い切って」という意味の慣用句です。
nerve は「神経」という意味以外にも「勇気、度胸、ずぶとさ」という意味があります。
work up ～ は「～を集める、徐々に増やす」という意味の句動詞です。
例：work up interest「次第に関心が高まる」、work up enthusiasm「情熱を掻き立てる」

ask a work friend if they wanted to hang out で「会社の同僚に遊びに行かないかと誘った」となります。
work friend は「会社の同僚」です。
ask if ～ で「～かどうかと聞く」となります。
ask if they want ～ なので「～したくないかと聞く、～しないかと誘う」となります。
hang out は「遊びに行く、ぶらぶらと時間を過ごす」という意味の句動詞です。
例：hang out at a library「図書館に入り浸る、」、hang out at the mall「ショッピングモールをぶらつく」

They winced, and said they were busy that day. で「彼らはビクッとして、その日は忙しいと言った」です。
wince ウィンスは「ビクッとする、たじろぐ、顔をしかめる」という意味の動詞です。
例：wince in pain「痛みで顔をゆがめる」

I hadn’t specified a day で「私は日時を特定していなかった、まだ誘う日を言ってなかった」です。
specify は「明確に述べる、特定する」です。
名詞形 specification「明細書、仕様書」でもおなじみですね。
