Japan’s economy slid into negative territory for the first time in two years at the beginning of the year, official data showed Friday, confirming preliminary figures issued last month.
で「年初の（第一四半期の）日本経済が2年ぶりにマイナス局面に落ち込んだ。金曜日、公式データが示した。先月発表されていた予備データの数値を確定する形で。」という意味になります。

Japan’s economy slid into negative territory で「日本経済がマイナス局面に陥った」という意味になります。
slid はslide「滑る」の過去形です
slide into ～ で「～に滑り落ちていく、～に次第に落ち込んでいく」です。
negative territory は金融用語の決まり文句で「マイナス局面、下げ相場」という意味の表現です。
例：open in negative territory「（金融市場が）下げて始まる」
対義語は、positive territory「上げ相場、プラス局面」です。

for the first time in two years at the beginning of the year, で「年初（第一四半期）では2年ぶり」となります。
for the first time in two years で「二年の中で初めて」です。
for the first time で「はじめて」という意味の言い回しです。
at the beginning of the year は「年の始まりで」ですが、この場合は四半期のうちの第一四半期（1月～3月）のことを言っています。

official data showed Friday, で「金曜日、公式なデータが明らかにした」です。

confirming preliminary figures issued last month. で「先月に発表された予備データの数値を確定して」です。
preliminary は「予選の、予備の、仮の」という意味の形容詞です。
preliminary data とは、統計・研究を元にしたニュースなどでよく登場する言葉です。
いわゆる「予備データ」と言うものです。
本番用データではないけども、それなりに根拠がしっかりしたデータのことです。
先に予備データを発表、その後、公式に本番用データが発表されるという流れです。
