で「公民権運動はたまたま、キング牧師の理念を活気づかるのに役立つ完璧な追い風となりました。私たちはそれに追従しました、彼のためではなく、私たち自身のためです。だってほら、彼は「私には夢がある」とスピーチしたのであって、「私にはプランがある」とは言わなかったのです。」という意味になります。

It just so happened (that) ～ は「それはたまたま起こったことだ、偶然だった」という意味の言い回しです。

何が偶然だったのかというと、
the Civil Rights Movement was the perfect thing to help him bring his cause to life で「公民権運動が、彼の理念をより強くさせるための完璧な追い風となった」ことです。
the perfect thing to ～ で「～をするための完璧なもの（追い風）」です。
help him do で「彼が～するのを助ける」です。
何をするのを助けたかというと、
bring his cause to life で「彼の理念を活気づかせる」です。
bring ～ to life で「～を生き生きさせる、強くする、活気づかせる、生命を吹き込む」という意味になります。

By the way, he gave the “I have a dream” speech, not the “I have a plan” speech. で「ところで、彼は「私には夢がある」とスピーチしたのであって、「私にはプランがある」とは言わなかったのです。」です。
“I have a dream” はキング牧師の有名なスピーチですね。
「スピーチをする」は give a speech といいます。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。

the Civil Rights Movement was the perfect thing
公民権運動が完璧な追い風となったのは

to help him
彼を助ける

bring his cause to life.
彼の理念に命を吹き込むのに
