Because people could feel that these leaders were at the helm not because they enjoyed directing others and not out of the pleasure of being looked at; they were there because they had no choice, because they were driven to do what they thought was right.

And this turns out to have a special power all its own…「そしてこれは、それ自体独特な特別な力を持つことになる。」

Because people could feel that ~ で「なぜなら人々は、~だと感じることができたから」です。

these leaders were at the helm not because they enjoyed directing others
例:be at the helm of state「国政を担当している」

and not out of the pleasure of being looked at
例:out of curiosity「好奇心から」
the pleasure of being looked at

they were there because they had no choice,「彼らはそこにいた、彼らは選択肢がなかったから」です。
they were therethere「そこ」は at the helm「指揮を執る立場」のことです。

because they were driven to do what they thought was right.
they were driven to do ~ で「彼らは突き動かされて~をした」です.
例:driven by a deep sense of purpose「深い目的意識によって動かされる」
what they thought was right
what was right「正しいこと」に (they thought) が挿入された形の関係代名詞節です。

Because people could feel that

these leaders were at the helm

not because

they enjoyed directing others

and
また

not out of the pleasure of being looked at;

they were there

because they had no choice,

because they were driven to do

what they thought was right.

Because people could feel that

these leaders were at the helm

not because

they enjoyed directing others

and

not out of the pleasure of being looked at;

they were there

because they had no choice,

because they were driven to do

what they thought was right.

Because people could feel that
these leaders were at the helm
not because
they enjoyed directing others
and
not out of the pleasure of being looked at;
they were there
because they had no choice,
because they were driven to do
what they thought was right.

Because people could feel that
these leaders were at the helm
not because
they enjoyed directing others
and
not out of the pleasure of being looked at;
they were there
because they had no choice,
because they were driven to do
what they thought was right.
