「これだけはぜひやるべきだ」という意味の言い回しですね。

(to) look at the very grim death count で「～を見ること、このとても悲惨な死者数」です。
look at ～ で「～に目を向ける、～を調べる」という意味です。
the very grim death count で「このとても悲惨な死者数」となります。
death count で「死者数、死亡総数」となります。
death toll と言ったりもします。

in the 20th century alone, で「20世紀だけでも」となります。
～ alone は後ろにつけて「～だけでも、～単体で」という意味になります。

誰の死亡者数かというと、
(death count) of really magnificent creative minds で「本当に錚々たるクリエイティブ界の巨匠たち（死者数）」です。
magnificent マグ[ニ]フィセントゥで「堂々たる、壮大な、見事な、偉大な」という意味の形容詞です。
creative minds の mind は「精神」でおなじみですが、この場合は「（高い知性をもった）知識人」という意味になります。
例：Great minds think alike.「賢者はみな同じように考える」

(who) died young and often at their own hands, で「若くして死んだ、またはしばしば自分の手で（死んだ）」です。
die at one’s hands で「～の手に掛かって死ぬ」という意味の言い回しです。
