で「金曜日、宇宙遊泳中の宇宙飛行士が地球の軌道を回る宇宙ゴミを一つ増やした。国際宇宙ステーションからバッテリーの作業をするために船外に出た直後に小さな鏡を無くしてしまって。クリス・キャスディ船長によるとその鏡は秒速1フィートの速度で浮いて飛んで行ったという。」という意味になります。
A spacewalking astronaut added to the pieces of junk orbiting the Earth で「宇宙遊泳中の宇宙飛行士が、～に付け加えた、地球を軌道周回する数々の宇宙ゴミに」です。
spacewalking は「宇宙遊泳中の」という意味になります。
space「宇宙」＋ walk「歩く」
astronaut [ア]ストゥロノトゥは「宇宙飛行士」ですね。
add to ～ で「～に付け足す、増やす、増加させる」です。
the pieces of junk で「数多くの屑、散り散りの屑」です。
(junk) orbiting the Earth で「地球を軌道周回している（屑）」です。
junk はこの場合は最近問題になっている space junk「宇宙ゴミ」のことですね。
space debris, orbital debris といったりもします。
losing a small mirror で「小さな鏡を無くして」です。
losing ～ は分詞構文で「～したことで、～してしまったので」という意味合いです。
as he lost ～ と言い換えられます。
a small mirror とは宇宙服の袖部分に装着された鏡で、後ろを確認する際に用いられるバックミラーのようなものだそうです。
as soon as ～「～するとすぐに、～するや否や、～した直後に」です。
he stepped out of the International Space Station で「彼が国際宇宙ステーションから一歩踏み出た（直後）」
step out of ～ で「～から一歩踏み出す」です。
for battery work で「バッテリー作業のために」です。
battery work とは「充電池の交換作業」です。
従来のニッケル水素電池から新しいリチウムイオンバッテリーへの交換が進められているのだそうです。
Commander Chris Cassidy said (that) ～ で「クリス・キャシディ船長は～といった」です。
the mirror floated away at about a foot per second. で「その鏡は浮いて流れ去った、およそ秒速1フィートの速さで」です。
float は「浮く、浮かぶ」です。
float away なので「ぷかぷか浮いて流れ去る」です。
at a foot per second で「秒速1フィートの速さで」です。
スピードを表す場合は前置詞 at を使います。
例：at a terrific pace「猛烈なペースで」
about はこの場合は「およそ、約」という意味の副詞になります。
foot は feet の単数形です。
1 foot で 30.48cm となります。
