本日の例文

アメリカ合衆国の歌手、トニー・ベネット氏の言葉です。

My whole premise has been, right from the beginning, that it would take me a lifetime to learn to explain myself as an artist. As you grow older, you learn what to do and what to leave out. You kind of simplify your work and get the same thing done with fewer strokes. It’s pretty interesting to me.

で「そもそもの大前提では、当初から、アーティストとしての自分をわかってもらえるようなるには一生かかるんだろうと思っていた。でも、年を取るにつれ、やるべきことと、やらなくてもいいことがわかってくる。すると自分の仕事をある程度単純化して、同じことが前よりも少ない工数で終わるようになる。実に興味深いことにね。」という意味になります。

My whole premise has been ～ で「私の大前提は～だった」です。
whole premise で「大前提」です。
fundamental premise, basice premise などとも言えます。
premise は「前提、根拠」という意味の名詞です。

right from the beginning, で「最初から、もともと、当初から」です。
from the beginning に強調で right がついている形です。

(has been that) it would take me a lifetime to ～ で「～するには一生かかるだろう（ということだった）」です。
it takes me ～ to … で「私には…するのに～（時間が）かかる」です。
例：It took me 10 years to achieve this success.「この成功を収めるのに10年かかりました。」
a lifetime で「一生」となります。

何をするのに一生かかるのかというと、
to learn to explain myself as an artist で「アーティストとしての自分を説明できるようになるのに」です。
learn to ～ で「～する方法を習得する、～できるようになる」です。
explain myself で「自分を説明する」ですがここでは「自分が何者なのかを知ってもらう、自分を上手に表現する」といういことです。

As you grow older, you learn what to do and what to leave out. で「人は年を取るにつれて、何をすべきか、何をしなくてもいいかを知る」です。
ここでの you は総称人称で「人は」という意味です。
grow old で「年を取る、大人になる」という意味の言い回しです。
what to do で「何をすべきか、なすべきこと」です。
what to leave out で「除外すること、何をしなくてもいいか」です。
leave out は「除外する、省く、飛ばす」という意味の句動詞（phrasal verb）です。
例：leave out essential information「重要な情報を抜かす」

You kind of simplify your work で「人は仕事を多少、単純化する」です。
ここでの kind of は話し言葉でよく使われる副詞で「多少、ちょっと、ある意味」という意味のぼかし表現です。
カインダと発音します。

and get the same thing done with fewer strokes. で「そして同じことを前より少ない工数で終わらせる」です。
get ～ done で「～を終わらせる」という意味です。
例：get one’s homework done「宿題を終わらせる」
with fewer strokes で「より少ないストロークで」です。
stroke とは「工数、ひと漕ぎ、筆のひと書き、ひと撫で」という「繰り返す動作の一回分」という意味があります。
例：Little strokes fell great oaks.「小さな一撃でも（何万回と繰り返せば）楢の巨木も倒せる」（雨垂れ石をも穿つ）

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
