If you were to ～ で「もし～しようものなら、～しようとするなら」という意味の言い回しです。
be to do ～ の形は意思「～しようとする」、予定・運命「～することになっている」などを表します。

in a moment, instantly などとも言えます、

every living force を修飾する関係代名詞節
(every living force) on which the continuation of all life in the world depended, で「世界のすべての生命の継続が頼っている（あらゆる生きる力）」となります。
on which は前置詞を伴った関係代名詞で、depended (on) につながっています。
the continuation of all life in the world で「世界のすべての命の継続」です。
continuation は「継続、続いていくこと、存続、途切れないこと」です。
depend on ～ で「～に頼る、～に依存する」です。
