本日の例文

オーストリアの小説家であるロベルト・ムージルの言葉です。

It will always be the same possibilities, in sum or on the average, that go on repeating themselves until a man comes along who does not value the actuality above idea. It is he who first gives the new possibilities their meaning, their direction, and he awakens them.

で「それはどのように計算しようがまさにその”可能性”なのだ。その”可能性”、それは何度も同じことを繰り返し続ける。アイデアよりも現実性を重要視しない人が現れるまで。そしてその人こそ、まさに初めてその新しい”可能性”に意味と方向性を持たせる人なのだ。そしてその可能性を目覚めさせる人だ。」という意味になります。

ムージルの代表作「特性のない男」からの一文のようです。かなり哲学的な内容の小説らしいです。

以下の著作説明を読むと今回の文章の言いたいことが何となく分かる気がするようなしないような。
「第一巻では、”現実”を”可能性”のほんの一部の実現した世界としかみなさない主人公ウルリヒの、この”可能性”を目覚ます感覚を梃子にして、第一次世界大戦前夜のオーストリア老大国の古都ウィーンにおける支配層の閉塞した精神風土の大規模な分析解明が実験的に行われ、その破砕された現実の裏から自由な可能性の新風が吹き付ける。」？

It will always be the same possibilities that ～ は、It is ～ that … の形の強調構文（分裂文）です。
It will always be ～ で「（それは）常に～であるだろう」です。
the same possibilities で「まさにその”可能性”」です。
possibility と reality はこの小説の中での一貫したテーマのようです。
the same possibilities「まさにその可能性」と、前述されていた”可能性”のことを言っているのが分かります。

in sum or on the average, はカンマで挿入されて「合計しても平均しても」です。
ここでは「どう計算したところで（最終的には～になる）」という意味と捉えます。

何が「結局はまさにその可能性」なのかというと、
(that) go on repeating themselves until ～ で「繰り返し続ける（のはその可能性だ）、～するまで」です。
go on ～ の主語が the same possibilities につながっています。
go on ～ing で「～し続ける」
repeat oneself で「繰り返し何度も言う、何度も繰り返す」という意味の言い回しです。
例：History repeats itself.「歴史は繰り返す。」、Don’t make me repeat myself.「何度も言わせないで。」
repeating themselves の themselves は possibilities を指しています。

その possibilities はいつまで繰り返すのかというと、
until a man comes along who does not value the actuality above idea. で「ある人が現れるまで、（その人は）～に重きを置かない人、アイデアよりも現実性に」です。
a man come along で「ある人が現れる」です。
come along は「やってくる、現れる」という意味の句動詞です。
例：wait for him to come along「彼が現れるのを待つ」
who ～ の関係代名詞節。離れてしまっていますが先行詞は a man です。
ちょっと難しめの文でよく目にする気がします。

value the actuality above idea で「アイデアよりもその現実性に価値を置く」です。
value はここでは動詞で「～を評価する、～に価値を見出す」です。
value ～ above … で「…よりも～を高く評価する」となります。
actuality アクチュ[ア]リティは「現実性、実在性」です。
形容詞形は actual [ア]クチュァォ「実際の、現実の、実在の」です。
above ～ は「～より上に」です。
idea は「アイデア」もしくは「イデア」でしょうか。
イデアとは、プラトン哲学で不完全な現実界に対応する完全で真実な実在という意味だそうです。

It is he who ～ こちらも同様に強調構文（分裂文）ですね。
he が強調された形です。
he とは先ほどの a man を指しています。
その人が何をする人なのかというと、
first gives the new possibilities their meaning, their direction, で「初めて与える、その可能性に、意味を、その方向性を（与える）」です。
first は副詞で「最初に、はじめて」となります。
firstly とすると全く別の意味「まず第一に」となってしまうので注意しましょう。
give ～ … で「～に…を与える」です。give … to ～ と同等です。
the new possibilities「その新しい”可能性”」に、their meaning で「それらの意味（意義）」を与える、です。

and he awakens them. で「そしてその人がそれらを呼び覚ます」です。
awaken アウェイクンで「～を目覚めさせる」です。
them は the possibilities を指します。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。

It will always be the same possibilities,
常に（それは）まさにその”可能性”である

in sum or on the average,
合計しようが平均しようが

that
～なのは

go on repeating themselves
何度も繰り返し続ける（のは）

until a man comes along
ある人がやってくるまで
