The sharing of joy, whether physical, emotional, psychic, or intellectual, forms a bridge between the sharers which can be the basis for understanding much of what is not shared between them, and lessens the threat of their difference.

で「（エロティックな）身体的、感情的、霊的、または知的な喜びの共有は、それを共有する二人の間にかけ橋を形成する。その架け橋は、二人の間で共有されていないものの大部分を理解するための足掛かりとなりえる。そしてお互いの『差異』という脅威を軽減させることができる。」という意味になります。

The sharing of joy, で「喜びの共有」です。
原文を読むと、erotic についての話だと分かりますので、この joy は erotic な意味での「喜び」を意味しています。
whether physical, emotional, psychic, or intellectual, は joy を修飾する形容詞を後から挿入的に列挙しています。
whether ～ or … で「～だろうと…だろうと」という意味になります。
その喜びが、身体的なものであろうと、感情的なものであろうと、霊的なものであろうと、知的なものであろうと、ということになります。

forms a bridge between ～ で「～を形作る、～の間に橋を」です。
form はここでは動詞で「～を形作る、～を形成する」です。
between the sharers で「共有者たちの間に」です。
つまり joy を共有する者たちです。

(which) can be the basis for ～ で「（その橋は）～のための土台になりうる」です。
この関係代名詞 which は、ここでは the sharers ではなく、a bridge between the sharers を受けていることに注意しましょう。
このように先行詞が離れるバターンもあることを覚えておきましょう。

何の基盤（the basis for ～）になるのかというと、
(the basis for) understanding much of ～ で「～の大部分を理解するための基盤」です。
何の大部分かというと、
what is not shared between them で「彼らの間で共有されていないもの」です。
関係代名詞 what「～するもの」の名詞節です。
them は the sharers を指しています。

and lessens the threat of their difference. で「そして（それは）～を減らす、彼らの違いという脅威を」です。
主語は変わらず a bridge between the sharers を受けています。
lessen ～ で「～を減らす、～を少なくする」という意味の動詞です。
the threat of ～ で「～という脅威」です。
of は「～という」という意味の【同格】の意味なっています。
