Today, I wanted to believe that people couldn’t possibly be this stupid, but prior to surgery my brother’s wife was put on an all-liquid diet. The idiot didn’t realize that putting cake and ice cream in a blender didn’t make it a fucking clear liquid. She argued, “I’m not eating it, I’m drinking it!” FML
で「今日、人間まさかこれほどバカになれるものではないと信じたかったが、うちの兄（弟）の嫁が外科手術に先立って絶食（液体以外禁止）となった。そのバカ嫁は、ケーキとアイスクリームをミキサーにかけても液体にはならないということが分かっていなかった。彼女はこう主張した。『私は食べていない。飲んでるだけだ！』。F*ck my life!」という意味になります。

I wanted to believe (that) ～ で「私は～であると信じたかった」です。
wanted と過去形を使って「信じたかった」が、実際それは無理な話だった、というニュアンスになっています。
何を信じたかったかというと、
(that) people couldn’t possibly be this stupid, で「人がまさかこれほど愚かにはなれないだろう（と）」です。
can’t possibly で「まさか～できない、とても～できない」という意味の言い回しです。
例：You can’t possibly do that.「それは絶対に無理だよ。」
this stupid の this は副詞で「これほどに、こんなに」という意味になっています。

but「が、しかし」
prior to surgery「手術に先立って」
my brother’s wife was put on an all-liquid diet. で「私の兄弟の妻が絶食になった」です。
be put on ～ で「～の状態にさせられる、～にかけれる」という意味の言い回しです。
例：I was put on complete bed rest.「私は絶対安静にされた。」
an all-liquid diet は日本で言うところの「絶食」です。
「水分しかとってはいけない食事制限」ということですね。
後から出てきますが、clear liquid diet とも言います。
（絶食：飲み物はOK、絶飲食：飲食全て禁止）
ですので、サラサラな水分なら飲んでいいと医者に言われた、ということです。

diet は「ダイエット」という意味もありますがここでは「食事法、食事療法」という意味で使われています。

The idiot didn’t realize (that) ～ で「そのバカは～だと理解していなかった」です。
the idiot は、my brother’s wife のことを指しています。
何を理解していなかったかというと、
(that) ～ 「といういことを」
putting cake and ice cream in a blender が主語となり「ケーキとアイスクリームをミキサーにかけること」です。
「（料理用の）ミキサー」は和製英語で、アメリカでは blender を使います。
didn’t make it a fucking clear liquid. で「（そうすることは）それを清澄液にはしない（ということを）です。」
make ～ … で「～を…にする」という意味の用法ですね。
例：make someone a celebrity「（人を）有名人にする」
make it の it は cake and ice cream を混ぜ合わせたもの（mixture）を指しています。
a (fucking) clear liquid で「清澄液」です。
clear liquid で「透明な液体」という意味もありますが、ここでは「サラサラの液体」という意味で、
clear liquid diet に該当するような飲み物を指します。
例えば、お茶や軽いスープ、果肉無しのフルーツジュース、スポーツドリンクなどを指すようです。

She argued,「彼女は～と主張した」
“I’m not eating it, I’m drinking it!” 「私は食べていない、飲んでいるんだ！」

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。

私は～だと信じたかった

people couldn’t possibly be this stupid,
人がまさかこれほどバカになれるものではないだろうと

but
しかし

prior to surgery
手術に先立って

my brother’s wife was put on an all-liquid diet.
