で「影の始まりと終わりは光と暗闇の間に存在して、それは限りなく増減することができる。影があるから物体はその形を表すことができる。物体の形は影なしには詳細に理解することはできないだろう。」という意味になります。

The beginnings and ends of shadow が主語で「影の始まりと終わり」です。
影の濃い・薄いのことを言っていると思われます。
lie between the light and darkness で「光と暗闇の間に存在する」です。
lie は「横たわる」ですがここでは「位置する、ある、存在する」という意味です。

ちなみに beginnings と ends が複数形になっている件ですが、調べてみました。
the beginning of ～ と the beginnings of ～ は両方とも使用例があり、違いについては以下の通りです。

“The beginnings of something are the signs or events which form the first part of it.”
つまり物事の始まりを「群発的な点のまとまり」としてとらえた場合は、beginnings で、一本の線の端っこの一点でとらえた場合は beginning となると考えればいいかと思います。
例：I had the beginnings of a headache.「頭痛が始まる兆候があった。」
例：The Beginnings of Western Science「西洋科学の始まり」
今回の例文の文脈内では、shadow「影」というものが、may be infinitely diminished とある通り、明確な始点・終点があるわけではなく「ぼんやり始まり、ぼんやり終わる」的な意味を表していると考えられます。

and may be infinitely diminished and infinitely increased. で「そして（それは）無限に減じたり、無限に増幅させたりできる」です。
ここでの may は「～してもよい、～することができる、～して差し支えない」という許可の意味になっています。
be infinitely diminished で「無限に減らす」
be infinitely increased で「無限に増やす」です。
つまり影の階調について、いくらでも細かく増減できる、ということですね。
infinitely は「無限に」という意味の副詞。
形容詞形は infinite [イ]ンフィニトゥ「無限の」で、反対語は finite [ファ]イナイトゥ「有限の」です。

Shadow is the means で「影は手段である」
どんな手段かというと、
(by which) bodies display their form. で「（その手段によって）物体が自身の形を表す」です。
つまり、影は物体が形を表すための手段である、ということです。
影がないと物体は形を表すことができない、ということです。
body は「体、人体、死体」という意味もありますが、ここではもっと広い意味で「物体」です。

could not be understood in detail「理解されることはないだろう、詳細に」
but for shadow.「影なしには」
but for ～ で「～なしには」という意味のコロケーションです。
ちょっと前に出てきた if it weren’t for ～ と同じ意味ですね。
例：But for water, nothing could live.「水がなかったら、何も生き残れません。」

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
