show the speaker that ～ なので「話者に～ということを示す」です。
(that) you’re truly trying to understand them で「あなたが本当に彼らを理解しようとしている（ことを）」です。
them は the speaker のことを指しています。
このように、性別不明の不特定の人を示す場合、代名詞は them を使います。
