で「人と一緒にいる時にくつろげる唯一の方法がみんなを笑わせることだった。私は従順な少女だったので、反抗の一つの形がユーモアだったのだ。私は人から馬鹿にされるのをかわすためにコメディを使った。例えば『ほら、このニキビ見て！』とか、人がやる前に自分で自分を笑いものにするのだ。」という意味になります。

The only way I could get comfortable around people までが主語で「唯一の方法、私がくつろげた、人々の周りで」です。
The only way (that) I could get comfortable で「唯一の方法、私が居心地よくいられた」です。
around people で「人々の周りで、人前で」です。
例：uncomfortable around people「人前だと落ち着けない」、love to be around people「人と関わるのが好きだ」
その唯一の方法が、
was to make them laugh. で「彼らを笑わせることだった」です。
make ～ laugh で「～を笑わせる」です。
them は people を指しています。

I was an obedient girl, で「私は従順な少女だった」です。
and ～「だから～」
humor was my one form of rebellion. で「ユーモアは私の抵抗のひとつの形だった」です。
rebellion で「抵抗、反抗、謀反」です。
動詞形は rebel [レ]ベォで「反抗する、歯向かう」です。

I used comedy to deflect. で「わたしはコメディを使った、かわすために」です。
deflect は「（光などを屈折させて）そらせる、かわす」です。
例：deflect public pressure「世論の圧力をかわす」、deflect the sun’s rays「太陽光を屈折させる」

Like, ～「例えば～」
‘Hey, check out my zit!’ で「ねえ、このニキビ見て！」です。

you know,「つまり」
making fun of yourself (before) で「自分を笑いものにすること（～する前に）」です。
make fun of ～ で「～を笑いものにする、～をからかう」という意味のイディオムです。
before someone else has a chance to. で「自分以外の誰かが（私をからかう）チャンスを得る前に」です。
つまり誰かからニキビを笑われる前に自分から笑いものにしてしまう、ということですね。
has a chance to の後には、chance to (make fun of me) が省略されています。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。

I could get comfortable around people
人前でくつろげた（方法）

was to make them laugh.
人を笑わせることだった

I was an obedient girl,
私が従順な少女だった

and humor was my one form of rebellion.
だから、ユーモアは私の反抗のひとつの形だった
