で「20世紀は、イギリスの池沼たちにとっては親切なものではなかった。多くの池はより多くの農地を作るために水を抜かれ、新しい建物のためのスペースを作るために埋め立てられた。無駄（waste）になったものもあれば、クズ（waste）でいっぱいになったものもある、というわけだ。」という意味になります。

The 20th century was not kind to ponds in Britain. で「20世紀は、イギリス国内の池たちには親切ではなかった。」です。
the 20th century で「20世紀」です。発音に注しましょう。
20th (twentieth) はトゥ[ウェ]ンティエスと言った感じになります。

Many were drained で「多くの池が水を抜かれた」です。
drain は「～の水を抜く」という意味の動詞。
例：drain a tank「水槽の水を抜く」
to create more farmland で「より多くの農地を作るために」です。
or ～「または～」
(were) filled in で「埋め立てられた」です。
to make room for new buildings. で「新しい建物のためのスペースを作るために」です。

Some went to waste, others were stuffed with it. で「（池たちの中には）無駄になったものもあるし、それ（waste）でいっぱいになったものもある。」です。
some ～, others … の文型で「～するものもあれば、…するものもある」という意味です。
go to waste は「無駄になる、水の泡になる」という意味のイディオム。
そして、stuffed with it の it は直前の waste を指しており、
つまり stuffed with waste で「ゴミクズでいっぱいになった」ということです。
これはつまり直前の文を受けて、
農地への転用→「使われず無駄になった」、開発用地→「ゴミクズでいっぱい」

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
