The people who were the most satisfied in their relationships at age 50 were the healthiest at age 80. And good, close relationships seem to buffer us from some of the slings and arrows of getting old.

で「50代で人間関係に最も満足していた人が、80代で最も健康だったのです。そして、良好で親密な人間関係は、年を取るという苦境から私たちを守ってくれるようです。」という意味になります。

The people who were the most satisfied in their relationships at age 50 までが主語になります。
「50代で人間関係に最も満足していた人達」です。
the people who were ~ で「~だった人たち」
the most satisfied in ~ で「~に最も満足していた」です。
the most 最上級の表現です。
後ろに形容詞しかないのに the が付くので違和感がありますが、
これは、形容詞の後ろに people が省略されていると考えるとしっくりきますね。
例:My house is the largest (one) in our neighborhood.「我が家は近所で一番大きい家だ。」
何に満足しているかというと、
in their relationships at age 50 で「自分たちの人間関係に、50代で」です。

were the healthiest at age 80. で「が、最も健康だった、80代で」です。
the healthiest も同じく、後ろに people(もしくは ones)が省略されていると考えます。
healthiest healthy の最上級(superlative)です。

And ~「そして~」
good, close relationships で「良好で、親密な人間関係は」
seem to ~ で「~するようだ、~するらしい」です。
buffer us from ~ で「~の衝撃から私たちを守る」です。
buffer は名詞では「緩衝材」です。
ここでは動詞で「衝撃を和らげる」という意味になります。

何の衝撃から守るのかというと、
(from) some of the slings and arrows of getting old. で「年を取るというある種の苦境から」です。
slings and arrows は「投石と弓矢」ですが、イディオムで「苦境、批判、過酷さ」という意味になります。
いろいろなところから石や矢がたくさん飛んでくるような厳しい状況というイメージです。
sling は紐に石をひっかけて遠くまで飛ばすための武器です。

また、骨折したときに腕を釣る包帯という意味もあります。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
