で「子供のころサイエンティフィック・アメリカンである記事を読みました。それは、地球上の様々な種類の生物たちの移動の効率性を計測するというものでした。それはつまり熊やチンパンジーやアライグマや鳥や魚などです。それらが1km移動するのにどれくらいのカロリーを消費するかです。人間も計測されていました。」という意味になります。

I read an article で「私はある記事を読んだ」です。
read は過去形では [レ]ドゥと発音します。
when I was very young で「私が子供のころに」です。
very young で「非常に若い」ですがここでは「子供の、幼い」という意味になります。
in Scientific American で「雑誌サイエンティフィック・アメリカンの中で」です。
サイエンティフィック・アメリカンは1845年創刊の世界最古の科学雑誌です。

And「そして」
it measured the efficiency of locomotion で「それは測定した、移動の効率性を」です。
measure ～ メジャーは「～を測定する、計測する、測る」という意味の動詞です。
the efficiency of locomotion (for ～) で「～にとっての移動の効率性」です。
efficiency イ[フィ]シェンスィーで「効率性、能率」です。
locomotion ロゥコ[モ]ウションは「移動、動くこと」です。
形容詞形は locomotive で「運動の、推進的な、原動力となる」という意味になります。
例：locomotive capability「（ロボットなどの）移動機能」
efficiency for ～ で「～にとっての効率」です。
例：fuel efficiency for automobiles「自動車の燃費効率」
for various species on the planet. で「様々な種にとって、地球上の」です。
species スピースィーズは「（生物の）種、種族」です。
単数でも specie とはならず、単数形・複数形が同じ形をとります。
例：The existence of this species is on the ropes.「この種の存在は危機に瀕している。」
on the planet は「地球上の」です。
the planet「その惑星」で「地球」を意味します。on earth とも言えます。

So ～「つまり」
for bears and chimpanzees and raccoons and birds and fish, で「クマやチンパンジーやアライグマや鳥や魚などの（効率性）」です。chimpanzee は chimp チンプとよく略されますね。
fish は単複同形なので、基本的には fishes とはなりません。

how many kilocalories per kilometer で「どれくらい多くのキロカロリーか？、1kmにつき」です。
did they spend to move? で「彼らが費やしたのは、動くために」です。
平叙文にすると They spent __ kilocalories to move. ですね。
they とは熊やチンパンジーなどの various species のことを指しています。

And humans were measured to. で「そして人間も測定された」です。
最後の to は too の間違いかと思います。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
