The humor is essentially dark for a cartoon で「ユーモアとは、本質的にダークだ、漫画にとって」です。
dark humor で「ブラックジョーク、毒のある笑い・ユーモア」です。
cartoon は主にアメリカの漫画・アニメを指します。
古くはミッキーマウスやトムとジェリー、バッドマンなど、最近だとシンプソンズやファミリーガイ、スポンジボブなどですね。
アニメーションや、日本発の anime も英語圏で浸透していますが、それとは絵柄も意味合いも一線を画していています。

and sophisticated で「そして高度な、複雑な」です。
sophisticated は「洗練された、あか抜けた、教養のある」という意味合いもありますが「（技術などが）非常に高度な、（思考などが）複雑な」と言った意味でしょう。

But at the same time,「しかし、同時に」
being a cartoon gives the writers more freedom で「漫画であることが、作家たちに与える、より多くの自由を」です。
than in a normal sitcom で「普通のシチュエーション・コメディの中でよりも」です。
sitcom は「シチュエーション・コメディ」です。
主要な舞台が固定。主要な登場人物はほぼ一定。（わずかなメンバー変化、ゲストの登場はある）連続ドラマだが、基本的に1話だけで内容が完結している。
実写ではフレンズやフルハウスなどが有名ですね。
ちなみにシンプソンズもカートゥーンですが形式はシットコムになります。
なので a normal sitcom というのは実写のシットコムを指しています。

It always pushes the line that ～ で「それはいつも～という限界を広げようとしている」です。
it は being a cartoon を指しています。
push the line で「線を押す」ですが、line は「フロントライン」つまり「最前線」です。
限界線を押し広げる、可能性を押し広げる、という意味合いですね。
that ～ は同格の that で「～という」という意味。the line that ～ で「～という限界線」です。
どんな限界線かというと、
(that) despite human failings, the Simpsons are really decent people. で「人間的な多くの欠点にもかかわらず、シンプソン一家が実にまともな人々である、（という限界線）」です。
human failings で「人間的な欠点」です。human は名詞では「人間」ですが、形容詞では「人間的な」という意味になります。
例：a human attitude「人間らしい態度」
failing は「欠点、短所、欠陥」です。fault や shortcoming とも言えます。
the Simpsons で「シンプソン一家」です。
the （苗字）s で「～一家」になります。
例：the Smiths「スミス一家」、the Isonos「磯野家」
are really decent people. で「は実にまともな人々だ」です。
