で「映画というものは、フイルムと、アーティスト・職人・技師たちとの間の情熱的で肉体的なまじわりから始まったのだ。（その者たちは）フィルムを扱い、巧みに操作し、まるで恋人が愛する人の体のあらゆる部分を熟知していくのと同じように、フイルムのことを熟知していったのだ。映画がどこへ向かおうとも、その始まりについて見失うわけにはいかないのだ。」という意味になります。

The cinema began with ～ で「映画は～とともに始まった」です。
begin with ～ で「～から始まる、～から興る」という意味の言い回しです。
何から始まったかというと、
a passionate, physical relationship で「情熱的な肉体関係」です。
passionate [パ]ッショニトゥで「情熱的な」です。
physical relationship は「肉体関係」です。男女の「交わり・セックス」を揶揄していますね。
between celluloid and ～ で「セルロイドと～との間の交わり」です。
celluloid は映画や写真で使う「フイルム」の昔の素材です。今はポリエステルに代わっています。
よくアニメ制作で「セル画」という言葉がでてきますがこれはセルロイドのシートに描いた絵のことですね。
セルロイドは燃えやすい特性があって、昔は映画館がよく火事になったそうです。
セルロイドと誰の交わりかというと、
(celluloid and) the artists and craftsmen and technicians で「（セルロイドと）アーティスト、職人、技師たち」との肉体関係です。
それらの人たちは、
who handled it, manipulated it で「それを扱い、それを巧みに利用した（人達）」です。
it は celluloid のことですね。
and「そして」
came to know it で「それを理解するようになった」です。
come to know ～ で「～のことをよくわかるようになる、熟知する」です。

the way ～ は「～の方法と同様に、～するような方法で」という意味の接続詞的な用法になっています。
in the way that ～ の省略形と考えてもいいかもしれません。
(the way) a lover comes to know ～ で「恋人が～を熟知するようになる（のと同じように）」
every inch of the body of the beloved. で「愛する人の体のあらゆる部分を」です。
every inch of ～ で「～の隅々まで、～のどこもかしこも」という意味のコロケーション。
the beloved は「愛する人」です。

No matter where the cinema goes, ～ で「映画がどこに向かおうとも」
we cannot afford to lose sight of its beginnings. で「我々は～することは許されない、その始まりの時のことを見失うことは」です。
can’t afford to do ～ で「～する余裕はない、～するわけにはいかない」という意味の言い回しです。
lose sight of ～ で「～を見失う」です。
its beginnings で「その始まりのこと」です。
it は the cinema を指しています。
beginnings は「（～の）はじまり、興り、起源、成り立ち」です。複数形になる場合が多いようです。
