Want of money and the distress of a thief can never be alleged as the cause of his thieving, for many honest people endure greater hardships with fortitude. We must therefore seek the cause elsewhere than in want of money, for that is the miser’s passion, not the thief’s.

Want of money and the distress of a thief can never be alleged as the cause of his thieving, for many honest people endure greater hardships with fortitude. We must therefore seek the cause elsewhere than in want of money, for that is the miser’s passion, not the thief’s.
で「金銭の不足や盗人の経済的困窮は、その窃盗行為の理由として申し立てられるものではない。なぜなら多くの誠実な人々がより厳しい苦難を忍耐で耐えているのだから。それゆれ我々は、金銭の不足以外の場所にその理由を探さねばならない。というのも盗みというものは、盗人の道というよりも、守銭奴の道だからだ。」という意味になります。

Want of money and the distress of a thief で「金銭の不足や、盗人の経済的困窮」です。
want of money の want はここでは名詞で「不足、欠乏、貧困」という意味になります。
例：make up for want of experience「経験不足を補う」
distress of a thief で「盗人の経済的困窮・貧苦」です。
distress ディストゥ[レ]スは「悩み、苦悩、（病気・けがなどによる）苦痛」という意味以外にも「貧苦、経済的困窮」という意味もあります。
例：diminish distress「苦痛を軽くする」、distressed area「被災地」、distressed for money「金に困っている」

can never be alleged で「～は申し立てることはできない」です。
allege は「（訴訟などで事実だと）～を申し立てる、訴える」です。
as the cause of his thieving, で「その人が盗んだことの動機として」です。
cause は「動機、理由」
of his thieving の his は a thief を指しています。
of ＋ 動名詞 の形で、意味上の主語 his が挿入された形です。
例：He insisted on my paying money.「彼は私がお金を払うことを主張した。」

for ～ は等位接続詞 FANBOYS のひとつ「というのも～だから」という意味です。

many honest people endure ～ で「多くの誠実な人々が～を耐えている」です。
何に耐えているかというと、
greater hardships「もっと大きな困難を」です。greater の比較の対象は「その盗人」よりもということです。
with fortitude. で「不屈の精神で」です。
fortitude [フォ]ーティテュードゥで「不屈さ、精神力、粘り強さ」です。
同じ語幹の言葉で、fortification「要塞、とりで」などを思い浮かべるとイメージしやすいですね。

We must therefore seek ～ で「我々は、それゆえに、～を探し求めねばならない」です。
the cause elsewhere than ～ で「その動機を、～以外のところに」
in want of money で「金銭の不足の中（以外に）」です。

for ～ は先ほどと同じく等位接続詞の for で「というのも～だから」です。
that is ～ で「それは～である（から）」
the miser’s passion, で「守銭奴の好む道」です。
miser マイザーは「けちんぼ、守銭奴」です。
not the thief’s. で「泥棒の好む道ではなくて」です。
passion は「情熱」という意味でおなじみですが、one’s passion で「～が好む道、～が情熱を傾けていること」となります。
例：My main passion is dancing.「私が人生で一番頑張っているのはダンスです。」

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
