In a year of startling election results and roller-coaster campaigns, you could be forgiven for failing to notice the battle to lead Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party. But the result of the ruling party’s internal vote on Friday matters a lot. The winner of the contest will become the new prime minister.
で「（世界各国での）衝撃的な選挙結果や波乱万丈の選挙戦の年にあって、日本の自民党党首選に気が付かなくても無理はないだろう。しかし、金曜日のこの日本の与党の内部投票の結果は非常に重要なものだ。なぜならその選挙戦の勝者が日本の新首相となるからだ。」という意味になります。

In a year of ～ で「～な一年の中にあって」
どんな年かというと、
startling election results「びっくりするような選挙結果」や、
and ～「また～」
roller-coaster campaigns, で「波乱万丈な選挙運動」です。
startling election results は、フランスで極右政党「国民連合（RN）」が躍進したことなどでしょうか。
roller-coaster campaigns は、民主党の候補が急遽バイデンからカマラ・ハリスに入れ替わったアメリカ大統領選のことでしょう。

you could be forgiven for ～ing は直訳すると「あなたは～のことで許されるだろう」です。
つまり「～しても無理はない」という意味の慣用句です。
for ～ は「（罪や責任など）～のことで」という意味です。
何をしても仕方がないのかというと、
(for) failing to notice ～ で「うっかり～に気付かない（こと）」です。
fail to do ～ で「～し損なう」という意味の言い回しです。
何に気が付かないのかというと、
the battle で「（選挙）戦」です。
to lead Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party. で「日本の自民党を率いるための」です。
battle to do ～ で「～するための戦い」という意味になります。
例：battle to save rare species「希少種を保護するための奮闘」
lead ～ で「～を率いる、～のリーダーとなる」です。

But ～「しかし～」
the result of the ruling party’s internal vote on Friday までが主語で「～の結果、この与党の内部投票の、金曜日の」です。
the ruling party は「その与党」で、前出した「自民党」を言い替え（パラフレーズ）した表現ですね。
反対の「野党」は、opposition party と言います。
internal vote は「党内での投票、互選」です。
matters a lot. で「非常に重要だ」です。
matter は「重要である」という意味の動詞。

The winner of the contest で「その争いの勝者が」
will become the new prime minister. で「新しい首相となる（のだから）」です。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
