For years, younger Americans have been more optimistic about the job market than older Americans, even through the depths of the Great Recession. But in an abrupt shift, a new poll released Monday finds young people’s confidence has plummeted over the past two years — while their elders remain more upbeat.
で「長年にわたり、若いアメリカ人は年配のアメリカ人よりも雇用市場について楽観的でした。リーマンショック後の大不況のどん底の時期でさえ、そうでした。しかし、月曜日に発表された新しい世論調査によると、その傾向に急激な変化が起きており、若者たちの自信はこの2年間で急落しています。一方で、年配層は依然としてより前向きな見方を保っています。」という意味になります。

For years,「長年の間」
younger Americans have been ～「「若年層のアメリカ人は～だった」です。
more optimistic about ～「～についてより楽観的（だった）」
(about) the job market「雇用市場（について）」
than older Americans,「アメリカの年配者たちよりも」です。
even through ～「たとえ～の中でも、〜を通してさえ」です。
through ～ で「～を通って、～を経験して」です。
(through) the depths of the Great Recession.「大不況のどん底（の中でも）」です。
the Great Recession はキャピタライズ（一文字目が大文字）しているので固有名詞です。
2007〜2009年の世界金融危機に伴う大不況（2008年のリーマンショック含む）を指します。
the depths of ～ と複数形で「最悪・最深刻な時期、どん底期」という意味合いです。
複数形なのは、深いところ一か所というよりも、深く沈み込んだ領域全体・厳しい局面、という意味合いだからです。

But ～「しかし～」
in an abrupt shift,「ある急激な変化の中で、急激な展開として」
a new poll released Monday 「月曜に公表されたある世論調査」
finds (that) ～ で「～だということを示している」です。
ここでの find は「（研究などの結果など）～を発見する、見いだす、示している」という意味合い。
「（～によると）…だと判明した」といった感じに訳せます。
(that) young people’s confidence has plummeted「若者たちの自信が急落している（と）」です。
plummet で「真っ逆さまに飛び込む、急落する」です。
over the past two years「この２年の間に」
while 「～である一方で」
their elders remain more upbeat.「年長者たちはより前向きなまま（である一方で）」
their elders の their はyoung people を指しています。
elders 「年上世代の人々」です。
upbeat は「上向きな、明るい、陽気な」という意味の形容詞。
confident や optimistic と同義語で近い意味合いですね。
