アメリカ合衆国の小説家J・D・サリンジャーの言葉です。

What really knocks me out is a book that, when you’re all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn’t happen much, though.

で「本当に僕を強く感動させるのは、読み終えたあとで、これを書いた作家が自分のすごく仲のいい友だちだったらいいのに。そして、気が向いたときにはいつでも電話をかけられたらいいのに、と思ってしまうような本だ。でも、そんなことはめったに起こらないけどね。」という意味になります。

当時のリアルな若者言葉とスラングを取り入れて小説を書いた事で有名なJ.D.サリンジャーらしい文体です。

What really knocks me out is ～ で「僕をとても感嘆させるものは～だ」です。
knock ～ out は「～をノックアウトする、打ち負かす」ですが、ここでは「感嘆させる、感動させる」という意味になっています。
a book that ～「～する本だ」
that節に入って、
, when you’re all done reading it,「それをすべて読み終えた時に」
be all done ～ing で「～することを完全に終わらせる」という意味のコロケーション。

you wish (that) ～ 「～だといいなと思う（ような本）」
the author that wrote it が主語で「それを書いた作家が」
was a terrific friend of yours「自分のすごく仲のいい友達だったら（いいなと思う）」
and ～「そして～」
you could call him up on the phone「彼に電話できる」
whenever you felt like it.「気が向いたときにいつでも」

That doesn’t happen much, though.「そんなことは、そんなに起こるものじゃないけどね。」
