本日の例文
「第三の男」で有名なイギリスの小説家グレアム・グリーンの言葉です。
Wouldn’t we all do better not trying to understand, accepting the fact that no human being will ever understand another, not a wife a husband, a lover a mistress, nor a parent a child? Perhaps that’s why men have invented God — a being capable of understanding. Perhaps if I wanted to be understood or to understand I would bam-boozle myself into belief, but I am a reporter; God exists only for leader-writers.

で「私たちは皆、無理に理解しようとするよりも、人間は決して他人を完全には理解できないのだ、という事実を受け入れたほうがよいのではないだろうか。妻が夫を、恋人が愛人を、親が子を理解することさえできないのだ。おそらく、だからこそ人間は神を生み出したのだろう――すべてを理解することのできる存在として。もし私が、誰かに理解されたいとか、誰かを理解したいとか思う人間だったなら、自分自身をうまく言いくるめて信仰を持つようになっていたかもしれない。だが私は記者だ。神が存在するのは、社説を書く人間にとってだけなのだ。」という意味になります。
Wouldn’t we all do better ～? で「私たちはみな（～した方が）うまくやっていけるのでは？」です。
do better は「もっとうまくやる、もっと良い結果を出す、向上する」という意味の言い回し。
分詞構文でつなげて、
not trying to understand, で「理解しようとしないで」です。
さらにもう一つ分詞構文で、
, accepting the fact that ～「～という事実を受け入れながら」です。
(that) no human being will ever understand another, で「人間は決して、他の人間を理解することはない（ということ）」
ever はここでは no と呼応して「決して～ない」です。
no human being で「人間はひとりも（～しない）」
another は human being を受けて「別の人間を」という意味です。
具体例を挙げて、
, not a wife a husband,「妻が夫を（理解することはない）」
a lover a mistress,「恋人が愛人を」
lover は「男性の恋人」、mistress は「女性の恋人・愛人」と男女の組み合わせを表します。
nor a parent a child「親が子を」です。
Perhaps「たぶん、きっと」
that’s why ～「それだから～なのだ」
men have invented God「人類は神を考え出したのだ」
ここで men は「男性たち」ではなく、古い用法の「人間、人類」ですね。
a being capable of understanding. で「理解する能力を持つ存在（として）」です。
a being で「存在、実在」という意味の名詞です。
capable of ～ing で「～することができる、～する能力を持つ」です。
Perhaps 「たぶん、きっと」
if I wanted to be understood or to understand「もし私が理解されたいとか、理解したいという気持ちがあったなら」
wanted は仮定法です。実際はそうじゃないけど「もし仮に～だったなら」という意味合い。
I would bam-boozle myself into belief, で「私は自分をだまして信仰を持つようにしていることだろう」です。
bam-boozle (bamboozle)は「～をだます、～をけむに巻く」という意味の動詞。
bam-boozle ～ into … で「～をだまして～に仕向ける」という意味のコロケーションです。
(into) belief で「信仰（に仕向ける）」
, but ～「でも～」
I am a reporter;「私は記者だ。」
God exists only for leader-writers.「神は論説記者のためにだけに存在するのだ。」です。
leader はイギリス英語で「（新聞の）論説、社説」です。editorial article とも言います。
もともとは世論を導くための役割（lead）からそう呼ばれていました。
それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
