life itself で「命そのもの、生命そのもの」
that which has traditionally been called “God.” で「それは伝統的には神と呼ばれてきたものだ」です。
that which ～ は what ～ と同じで「～するもの」です。
that which は what よりやや硬く、哲学的・文語的。
traditionally で「伝統的に、従来は」

As soon as you turn away from it, で「それから目を背けるとすぐに」
it は先ほどの神と呼ばれていたもの、命そのものの力、を指しています。
