で「彼はハーバード大に籍を置き、スミソニアン博物館に勤めていて、人脈豊富でした。当時の優秀な知識層とも知り合いでした。彼はお金で見つけられる中で最高の頭脳を雇い、市場環境は最高でした。」という意味になります。

前回に続き、サミュエル・ピアポント・ラングレーについてです。

He held a seat at Harvard で「ハーバード大に席を持っていた」となります。
held は hold「確保する、握る、捕まえておく」の過去形です。
hold a seat で「議席を持つ、在籍している」という意味の言い回しです。

worked at the Smithsonian で「スミソニアンで働いていた」となります。
Smithsonian はアメリカを代表するスミソニアン博物館のことです。

and was extremely well-connected; で「そして極めて人脈豊富だった」となります。
extremely イクス・トゥ[リ]ーム・リは「極めて、非常に、極度に」という意味の副詞（adverb）です。
very を強めた感じですね。
well-connected は直訳すれば「よく繋がった」で、「人脈がある、コネに恵まれた」という意味の形容詞です。
例：very well-connected in Washington「ワシントンで多くの有力者を知っている、政界にコネを持った」

he knew all the big minds of the day. で「彼はその当時の知識エリートもみんな知っていた」となります。
big minds は直訳すると「大きな精神たち」となりますが、この場合の mind は「知性」という意味です。
ですので「大きな知性」→いわゆる「学会でも最高レベルの知識層、第一線の研究者たち」という意味になります。
例：mind and character「知性と品性」、person of the mind「優れた知性を持つ人」
～ of the day は「その当時の～、その頃の～」という意味の言い回しです。
この場合の day は「日」ではなく、「時代、頃」という意味になります。
例：popular star of the day「当時の人気スター」、in those days「その当時は」

He hired the best minds money could find で「彼は金で探せる最高の頭脳を雇った」となります。
the best minds money could find で「金で探せる中では最高の知性（を持った人）たち」です。
money could find で「金で見つけられる」です。直前の the best minds を修飾する関係代名詞説です。

the market conditions were fantastic. で「市場環境は最高だった」です。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。

彼はハーバード大に籍を置き

and worked at the Smithsonian
スミソニアン学術協会で働いていた
