本日の例文

スーザン・ケイン氏によるTEDでのスピーチ「内向的な人が秘めている力」です。

I felt as if the books needed me somehow, and they were calling out to me and I was forsaking them. But I did forsake them and I didn’t open that suitcase again until I was back home with my family at the end of the summer.

I felt as if the books needed me somehow, and they were calling out to me and I was forsaking them. But I did forsake them and I didn’t open that suitcase again until I was back home with my family at the end of the summer.
で「私には、なんとなく本たちが私を求めているような気がしました。本達が私に叫んでいるような、そして私は彼らを見捨ててしまったような気がしました。でも実際、私は彼らを見捨てたのです。夏が終わって帰宅して家族と一緒になるまで私はそのスーツケースを二度と開けなかったのです。」という意味になります。

I felt as if ～ で「～のような気がした」です。
as if ～ は「まるで～のように」という意味の接続詞です。
例：as if it were nothing「まるで何でもないかのように」

どんな風に感じたのかというと、
(as if) the books needed me somehow で「なんとなくその本たちが私を必要としている（ような）」です。
somehow は「なんとなく、なんだか」という意味の副詞（adverb）です。
とてもよく使う表現ですので覚えておきましょう。
the books は「その本たち」は、あのスーツケースにしまった本たちのことですね。

(and) they were calling out to me and I was forsaking them で「そして彼らが私に叫んでいる（ような）、そして私が彼らを見捨てた（ような気がした）」です。
call out で「大声で叫ぶ」です。
call out to me なので「私に向かって叫ぶ」ですね。
「私たちを見捨てないでーッ」と。
forsake them で「彼らを見捨てる」です。
forsake フォー[セ]イクで「（大切なものを）見捨てる、あきらめて手放す、放棄する」という意味の動詞（verb）です。
例：forsake one’s faith「信仰を捨てる」

But I did forsake them で「でも実際に私は彼らを見捨てたのだ」です。
この場合の did は強調の do で「実際に～した、本当に～した」という意味です。

and I didn’t open that suitcase again で「そして私はそのスーツケースを二度と開けなかった」です。

until I was back home with my family at the end of the summer. で「私が家に戻り家族と一緒になるまで、その夏の終わりに」です。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。

I felt as if
私はまるで～のように感じた

the books needed me somehow,
その本たちが何となく私を求めている

and they were calling out to me
そして彼らが私に叫んでいるように

and I was forsaking them.
そして私が彼らを見捨てたように
