で「そして彼は実のところ、彼の絵本を読んだ幼い子供たちと会うことを怖がっていたのです。子供たちが陽気なサンタさんのような人物像を期待していて、無口な彼の性格が彼らをがっかりさせてしまうのではないかと心配してです。」という意味になります。

And he was actually afraid to ～ で「そして彼は実は～するのを恐れていた」です。
he とは前回の続きで絵本作家のセオドア・ガイゼル（ドクター・スース）のことです。
be afraid to ～ で「～することを恐れる」です。
後ろに名詞が来るときは be afraid of ～ ですね。

何を恐れていたかというと、
to meet the young children who read his books で「彼の本を読んだ幼い子供たちと会う事」です。
young children は「幼い子供たち、幼児」です。
young は「若い」という意味でおなじみですが、この場合のように「幼い」という意味でもよく使われます。

for fear that ～ で「～という恐れから」です。
この場合の for ～ は「～のために、～と言う理由で」という意味です。
fear (that) ～ で「～という恐れ、～という心配」です。

どんな心配かというと、
they were expecting him this kind of jolly Santa Claus-like figure で「彼らは彼に陽気なサンタさんのような人物像を期待している」です。
they は young children のことです。
expect ～ (to be) … で「～が…であることを期待する」です。
this kind of ～ で「この種の～のような」です。
jolly Santa Claus-like figure で「陽気なサンタクロース風の人物像」です。
jolly は「陽気な」という意味の形容詞ですね。
figure は「人物像、肖像、象徴」という意味になります。

and would be disappointed with his more reserved persona. で「そしてがっかりするだろう、彼の思っていたよりも無口な人格に」です。
be disappointed with ～ で「～にがっかりする」です。
reserved は「無口な、打ち解けない、よそよそしい、控えめな」です。
例：He is usually reserved.「彼は普段は無口だ」

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
