People believed (that) ～ で「人々は～だと信じていた」です。

creativity was this divine attendant spirit で「創造性とは、なんて言うかこんな、神の付き添いの精霊」となります。
divine attendant spirit で「人間に付き添う精霊」といった意味になります。
spirit は「精神」という意味もありますが、この場合は「霊魂、精霊、幽霊、お化け、妖精」というい意味です。
attendant spirit なので「人に付き添う精霊」ですね。
日本で言えば「守護霊、守り神」といった感じでしょうか。
divine は「神の」という意味の形容詞です。
例：divine gift「神からの贈り物」、divine justice「神の裁き、天罰」
this についてはこの場合は「ほらこんな感じの、なんと言うかこんな風な」という意味あいで、
今、話者が「思い浮かべているもの」を指していいます。
例：I have this strange feeling.「なんかこう変な感じがする」、I have this boyfriend named Bob.「私、ボブっていうボーイフレンドがいるんだけど。」
(that) came to human beings で「人間にやってくる（精霊）」です。

from some distant and unknowable source, で「遠く知ることのできない発信源からの」です。
distant は「距離が離れた、ぼんやりした」という意味の形容詞です。
例：distant eye「遠くを見るようなぼんやりした目」、distant goal「遠い目標」
unknowable で「知ることができない、不可知の」です。
un- know -able です。

for distant and unknowable reasons. で「ぼんやりと知ることのできない理由で」です。
distant and unknowable は同じく「遠くてぼんやりして知ることができない、人知を超えた」という意味ですね。
