で「そして（彼は）それを元居た場所へと解き放ち、もともと、こんなに当然で、悩ましいものである必要はなかったのだと気付いた。それはどちらかというと、奇妙で、驚異的で、異様な共同作業のようなもの、ある意味で、トムと、そのおかしな外的存在（彼自身ではない）との会話のようなもの、と言っていいかもしれない。」という意味になります。

前回から引き続き、ミュージシャンのトム・ウェイツの話です。

released it back where it came from で「それを元居た場所に返した」です。
it とは前回からの続きで、the genius のことです。
where it came from で「それが来たところ、それの元いた場所」という意味の名詞句になります。
come from ～ で「～から来る、～出身である」です。

and realized that ～ で「～ということを悟った、～だと気付いた」です。

何に気付いたかというと、
(that) this didn’t have to be this internalized, tormented thing. で「このことが、～である必要はなかったと、こんなに内在化されて、苦しめらるようなこと（である必要はなかった）」です。
this とは文脈から作曲のプロセスの事です。
internalized は「内在化した、無意識のうちに当たり前となってしまった」という意味の形容詞です。
何度も繰り返しやることで、特に意識しなくなるという意味合いです。
例：He has internalized his father’s traditional values.「彼は父親の伝統的価値観が自然と身に付いている。」
２個目の this はここでは副詞で「これほど～、こんなに～」という意味になります。

It could be this peculiar, wondrous, bizarre collaboration で「（そうではなく）それは～なのかもしれない、奇妙で驚異的でおかしなコラボレーションのようなもの」です。
ここでの this は「ある種の、ある意味で、～のような」というぼかしの意味です。
後に出てくる、kind of と同じような意味合いと考えていいかと思います。

kind of conversation between Tom and the strange, external thing で「会話みたいなもの、トムと、その変な外的存在との」です。
上記 collaboration と同格（言い換え）となります。
the strange, external thing とは、the genius (genie) のことですね。

(that) was not quite Tom で「（それは）トム自身ではない」です。

「変わった、奇妙な」という意味の形容詞（strange と peculiar と bizarre）が出てきましたが以下がその違いについて参考になります。
